Bennett Elementary 6th Grade- 1952 On a whim, I decided to call Bennett Elementary and see if they had any class pictures that I could add to our site. So many Poinsettia Heights kids went from Bennett to Naval Air and then Lauderdale High, I thought it might be fun for some of us to recall those early days. Amy answered my call and was more than happy to show me a collection of PTA scrapbooks that have been preserved all these years, beginning with our 6th grade class. There were no class pictures taken then, but I did find some newspaper clippings with some group pictures - yours and mine included, Patrol Captain! - and a mimeographed 6th grade school "newspaper". Names mentioned in the school newspaper, included: The Simbari brothers, John Schuller, Ronnie Donald, Rene Carr, Bonnie Linane, Jim Coulter, Joe Castronova, Carol Carroll, Jack Hallam, Sharon Coons, Carl Adams, George Peter, David Nightingale, Barbara Oswald, Tony Burkey, Barbara Roman, Dolores Hines, Gloria Gall, Linda Bower, Gail Goodspeed and yourself - again! Other pictures show Judy Griffin, Cindy Corcoron, Sussie Smith, Linda Menedez, Fred Olander, Bill Saunders, Bill Dunifon, Noel Vawter, Steve Brown. Remember anyone else? Most of the digital pictures I took require zooming to make out the details and some could use a more professional touch. I'll bring copies of other articles to the reunion to share. If anyone wants to see the original scrapbook, Amy would be glad to pull them out. She can be reached at 754-322-5450. Apparently, in 1952 Bennett was one of many elementary schools in the US chosen to inoculate their students with the experimental polio vaccine. Remember the polio scare? Interesting.
