We will ride to Carlos, Texas on January 21th, Saturday.
Some of the Houston T Riders will meet at Kelley's Restaurant on Park Place and I-45,
at 7AM Saturday morning, Others riders will meet at the Chevron Station on Alt-90 at
the first light past Highway 6 -- going toward Richmond -- at 10AM.
The plan is to meet some of T Riders that we haven't met before.
"DPSSPY" will be there, "DANBGT" will be there, and the "OLDRIDER"
(all of them) will be there. Even if you are not going on the ride
you may want to stop by for this historic photo op.
Weather is supposed to be okay -- a cold front moves in tonight, with
rain... but the rain is supposed to be over by morning. Then by 10AM,
the roads should be in good shape for a ride: either to the Chevron
Station or to Carlos, TX for lunch -- your choice.
Breakfast at Kelley's Restaurant with Pat (the 'oldrider') and a few guys from the
Retreads group -- including Bob Switzer. Three of us left Kelley's at 9AM (Pat got
called into work) and headed west down Loop 610, with fairly heavy traffic --
until we got to Alt-90 and turned South toward Richmond.
After a bunch of road construction (they're building some impressive overpasses in
that area south of the loop), we passed Highway 6 and took the second light left into
the Chevron -- where Mike and Diana were waiting for us. [then there were 2 Ts]
About 9:45 a very cool T pulled up with an extra special look to it... could have
been the helmet or the heavy leather jacket or the handle-bar mustache... or maybe
it was the light-bar on a very nice looking and chromey T... not sure, but we were
about to meet the 'dpsspy'. Keith's T had custom floorboard and backrests; like
the chrome back on the back of his front-seat backrest, that he had
cut out and assembled in Alvin. [then there were 3 Ts]
About 10:00 a really good looking (loud) T came pulling in for gas with an unknown rider
with a full-faced, dark glass faceplate on his helmet and "Van & Hines Dual Baggers"
announcing his arrival. It turned out to be the 'danbgt'. There isn't enough room
room on this page to list the accessories on Dan's bike -- so you are going
to have to see it for yourself. [then there were 4]
That made a pretty picture.
Spy lead the Riders (3 Ts, a Triumph, and a Valkyrie) from Alt-90, to Route 359, to
Winner-Foster Road in Foster, Texas -- which was the best place to ride yet...
through cow pastures, around haystacks, and creeks... relaxing. We crossed over
Route 99 and made our way to Farm Market 362, which took us to Navasota,
HW 6 and over to FM 3090 to Carlos, Texas. We had hamburgers at the
Yankee's Tavern (a biker hangout) where I saw a 450 pound biker
who was named Bubba (the guy below, on the red & black
Valkyrie is not Bubba, he's Bob Switzer) just kiddin' Bob
We returned through the Sam Houston National Forrest, to Montgomery and Route 149,
to Pineherst and Highway 249 -- down to Beltway 8 and home. Close to 300 miles
over about 10 hours total (including breakfast time) and the end to an
extraordinary ride to Carlos, Texas.
